Volleys (hitting balls back before they have bounced) bring a lot of action and fun to your tennis game. They're not hard to do either. It's mostly a matter of getting rid of all the fluff and unnecessary movement.
Let me show you what I mean, with the help of some pictures and videos.
Here we go!
- Use a Continental Grip.
- If you find it very awkward to use this grip, you can move your hand a bit clockwise on the forehand side, and a bit counter-clockwise on the backhand side.
- Make a unit turn. (Below are two video examples of how to do that.)
- The same goes if the ball comes to your other side.
- Push off with your foot closest to the ball, move forward to meet the ball, and land your step on the other foot.
- And, again, the same on the other side
- As you can see, you straighten your arm a bit, as soon as you have pushed off with your feet. It's not so much a swinging motion as it is a blocking motion.
- The arm moves slightly from high to low. On low balls, slightly open the racket face, to help the ball go over the net.
- Make sure to hit the ball in front of you.
