The backhand (the shot played on your left side if you are right-handed) is one of the basic shots in tennis. However, most people have great difficulty with it in the beginning. You can avoid a lot of frustration, if you use the following building blocks.
As with the forehand, I have inserted some videos and photos for your benefit.
Here we go!
- Use a Semi-Western Grip.
- Make a unit turn.
- Drop the racket face at the end of the backswing.
- Make a forward swing that goes a good deal from low to high, ending high and in front of you.
- Take a square - or 'neutral' hitting stance, shifting your weight from the back to the front foot.
- Make sure that your contact point is a well ahead of your front foot at about hip-height
